Nancy Bauer found her way to philosophy only after working as a journalist during and after college. To her surprise, she received a Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard University in 1997. She is interested in thinking about what philosophy is and what role it plays, or should or might play, in everyday human life, and she thinks out loud about this question in classes in the history of European philosophy, feminism, film, and ethics. Her scholarly work focuses on women in philosophy and on the history of philosophical thinking, and she has written a book on Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex that will be published by Columbia University Press in 2001. She vaguely remembers that before she had children she used to enjoy riding her child-chair-free bike, cooking things other than macaroni and cheese, watching lots of non-Disney movies, and going to see local garage rock bands in Central Square. |
